Create a CV – a practical work book

Are you tired of being rejected for jobs before you even have an interview? Without a great CV you will not even get your foot in the door.  A professional, well written CV is the key to getting the job you want.

Have you been looking at programmes that offer you a number of templates and complete it all online? But will this help you to stand out from the crowd if you look the same as others.

Have you thought about paying someone to write it from scratch for you? But whose style of language are they using? Do they write as them or you?

Have you bought a CV book but it languishes on the shelf, for about the same price of a book from the bookshop, go through a programme that takes you step by step through what to do.

This create a CV programme guides you effortlessly to

  • Create a CV that gets results
  • Create a covering letter that gets results

This is a UK based company.  American resumes are different from a British CV,

So get the inside details on what a UK company wants.

Too many people struggle to write a CV that really sells themselves to a possible employer.  They end up using a template that looks naff!  Others will pay out well over £100 to get one prepared by one of the CV writing services. Some of these are good, but pricy, but many of them are glorified typing agencies, using a template.  If you choose this when you want a new CV you are back to them, with more expense.

Create a CV is a 96 page guided workbook taking you step by step to creating a CV. Following these steps means you will have learned the skill to create your own at any time in the future.

  • Find out about why you should have a CV, how it helps the recruiter and the benefits
  • Learn about the different types of CV – chronological, functional and combination and choose the right one for you.
  • Then simply follow the steps needed to construct an effective CV

This guided workbook takes you through 3 clear phases

  1. Preparation

  2.  Creation

  3.  Review

Plus you get a step by step guide to creating an effective covering letter.

"The good thing about the CV guide is that it asks all the relevant questions for you.  Otherwise you would have to think up the questions yourself and then find the answers as well!"  Basically, I thought it was really good; it didn't feel like hard work.  Before you know it, from answering the questions in the booklet, you soon have more than enough information to build your CV with.  The advice is really good, and it raises a lot of points I had never considered previously, such as writing "would like a job with good opportunities for career progression" etc., which obviously sounds bad to the employer.  I guess it is an insight into how a potential employer might view an application.  The best thing, in my opinion, is the secret world of achievement bullets!

 1:  Preparation phase

 Work History

You will be guided to collect the information you need before you can begin writing. Reflect on specific questions to help you at interview. You don’t want to be thinking about these areas when you are at the interview – this is too late and can mean you lose out on the job.  Thinking of each of your jobs at this stage helps you remember things you may otherwise forget in the rush to complete your CV.

Learn the need to consider what you achieved in each job, not what you did. This brings you CV alive and makes a recruiter want to shortlist you. Sell in clear and measurable terms exactly what you achieved. We have a huge A-Z list of action words in the Appendix so you can broaden out the way you describe your achievements.

Bonus Tip: Learn what to say and do when you lack the experience you need for a job

 Educational details

You must be able to clearly describe the qualifications you have gained, through full time education, part time study and short courses. You will be taken deeper than a list of qualifications to expand on the benefits gained, and the extent of your knowledge.

 Interests

Should you include details of your hobbies and interests on your CV?

Tip:  Learn how certain activities and interests are perceived by the recruiter?  Learn the benefits of including organisational memberships and including positions of authority.

 Profile or power statement

Learn the biggest mistake people can make in writing this and what you need to do to impress the recruiter.

This tip alone is worth the price of the book!

 2:  Creation phase

You will be taken, step by step to create your CV, using the details you have gathered and be guided to present it in a structured and systematic way.

A major element of this is being guided to produce achievement statements. It can be really hard to write these yourself, but we make it simple by taking you through the 5 questions you need to answer to produce your achievement bullets.

Expert bonus: learn the 5 questions you need to answer to produce the points that will sell you to the employer.  You will review previous jobs to come up with examples.

Throughout the book I'm a guide, ensuring you create the best CV possible for you, so you will be taken through the 14 areas organisations seek people to excel in, and be prompted to find the example that could make the difference. Don’t panic, there are 15 examples to help you!

Having dug deep to find examples, you now create clear, specific and measurable examples for each job – just waiting for you to include them in your CV.   Don't panic – if you are not sure where to start, I have 15 examples to help you.

You will see how easy it is to put your CV together.  Now, just three sections to add.

Education & qualifications and professional memberships – you already have collected this information so you just cut and paste it in here.

Interests – again, it's easy to cut and paste here.

Optional personal details – what do you include, what do you ignore? We discuss the issue of age , how to describe your driving licence, little things like this add up to a significant impact overall.

Review and revise your profile or power statement and compare your draft with 5 examples.

 Layout and Design

We discuss the layout.  We have 21 key points that refer to layout and style. Then follow a list of questions to finalise the presentation. We discuss the best ways to present your CV – what paper, ink, font, how to send, all are covered in this section.

Bonus: Submit your CV to Denise for a 20 minute critique. Plus, once your CV is completed, ask Denise to create a PDF version for you.

 3:  Review phase

Almost there!  Follow a check list.  Can you say YES to all of them? If not, you need to review it again.

Then we consider the 9 different ways you can use your CV.  Too many people only use one or two.  What about the other 7?

You will also understand why you need more than one CV and the best time to submit your CV.

 The covering letter

The covering letter is 50% of your sales literature and so just as important as your CV. Find out the 17 things you need to include in your letter to stand the best chance of success, including the best time to send it.

 We cover more

·         Find out how best to answer the salary question

There are many CV options so why should I choose this one?

  • It's a practical step by step guide – you learn what you need to do to make it easy to keep your CV updated. You will learn the skills and save lots of money!
  • It's written by a practical expert, not a journalist synthesizing information from other books and websites. It's written by a successful recruiter who has seen literally thousands of CVs and covering letters, helping organisations to shortlist, and using them in interview. Too often people are wasting the price of a stamp, and then there is the time they spent in creating something mediocre.
  • Denise has a track record of success, helping 500+ clients get the job they want.  She also worked with a large outplacement company, where she was paid when the client got a job and had a great success record.
  • Denise is customer focused and goes out of her way to help her clients and customers. She wants to help you create a great CV as one step towards getting a fantastic job – you get the bonus of a 20 minute personal review by Denise.  This will give you confirmation of what looks great, and point out how to improve.
  • You will have a CV that sells yourself well and dramatically increases your chances of success.

Remember, this is not just about getting a CV together.  It will also guide you through creating a covering letter.
